The greater are often research scientists with more than a touch of poet and philosopher. In fact, a completely new variety has emerged recently, which given the chance, may one day amount to a full-blown species. Over the last five to 10 years, a number of state-run and private programs have sprung up that offer naturalist or master naturalist certificates.
Some people participate in those programs to enhance their professional lives, as teachers or park rangers (this hybridization is common).
Not by people meaning to be insulting, mind you; rather because – usually – they have recently discovered that I do so for no financial or other intentional benefit to myself.
Realism and naturalism are arguably very similar but as you take a deeper look they appear different.

In literature it extended the tradition of realism, aiming at an even more faithful, unselective representation of reality, a veritable "slice of life," presented without moral judgment.
Naturalism differed from realism in its assumption of scientific determinism, which led naturalistic authors to emphasize man's accidental, physiological nature rather than his moral or rational qualities.
